A mammoth gathering estimated by organizers at 20,000 community members got together for the 31st Annual Convention of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at in Canada, held at the International Center in Mississauga over three days.
With the last day of the convention coinciding with Canada Day, several high-profile personalities led by Premier Dalton McGuinty graced the event.
McGuinty thanked the organizers for promoting a better understanding of the community's faith, while urging the need for close cooperation and for working together.
"Today we have a family of 13 million Ontarians-- and as family we must stand up for one another," he said.
McGuinty highlighted his government's achievements in healthcare, education, public transit and help for newcomers.
This is the first time a sitting premier has participated in the convention.
Others at the event included Greg Sorbara, Ontario's minister of finance; Susan Fennell, Brampton's mayor; Satish Mehta, Indian consul general; and several MPs and MPPs.
It was Fennell's second successive appearance at the Ahmadiyya gathering. She underlined her pleasure at final approval having been accorded to the community's new Brampton mosque granted just last week, while noting the mosque would be a grand landmark on the city's skyline.
"It was at my urging the project not be scaled down that the mosque is being built as a full-sized, grand landmark in Brampton-- which really is a composite of the multicultural mosaic representative of all Canada," Fennell said. "We have 100 languages and 70 cultures represented among our city residents, yet live, work and play peacefully, which shows the capacity of multi-culturism and diversity in Brampton."
Earlier Maulana Mubarak Nazir, principal, Jamia Ahmadiyya Canada, voiced the community's pledge to always support and defend Canada, which grants political and religious freedom, and allows all Canadians to live, work, worship and profess their faith without fear or prejudice. "Despite some reservations, we will always support our troops in Kandahar," he said.
The final day of the Jalsa included Canada Day celebrations, and a rendition of the national anthem by young Ahmadiyya boys and girls recited to an enthusiastic flag-waving audience.
The three-day event also presented a series of lectures. Malik Lal Khan, president of Canada's Ahmadiyya community, discussed the challenges of family breakdown and reminded each spouse of their religious responsibilities based on love and mutual respect. Noting the unbearable financial and social cost of domestic disputes, Malik emphasized that society cannot achieve heavenly peace without establishing domestic harmony.
An earlier lecture dispelled the common misconception that Islamic law is misogynistic by demonstrating it promotes equality between Muslim men and women, and noted the practice of wearing the veil is inspired by and in honour of Mother Mary in the Biblical context.
