At 5 a.m. it was pitch dark at Jane Street and Major Mackenzie Drive in Vaughan. The McDonald's, kittycorner to Canada's Wonderland, was still closed, and at Tim Hortons I was the only customer.
But a few minutes later, just up the street at the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at, a white mosque on the west side of Jane, a speaker crackled to life in the parking lot and out came the plaintive Arabic call to prayer. Here, suddenly, the streets were filled with silent life. Men and women, the men dressed in the long white shalwar camise of their native Pakistan, emerged from the homes that cluster around the mosque. Hundreds came walking across the streets through the darkness, the only sound the squeak of their soles on the asphalt. Near the building couples separated, the women going through a door that leads to their basement prayer hall, the men headed upstairs. I joined them. Head coverings are de rigueur, but along with the more traditional Mujahideen-type hats, I had plenty of company in my baseball cap.
No, the arrival of Ramadan has not inspired me to convert to Islam, I am just doing some research on Toronto's Muslims. At 6:15 a.m. it was all over, and, the sun still not peeking from the horizon, everyone drifted off to change for their day jobs. But not to Tim Hortons: these folks will not eat or drink again until after sunset.
