Muslim convention will draw 20,000 (The news Mississauga)
June 28, 2007

Thousands of people will attend the 31st annual convention of Canada's Ahmadiyya Muslim Community over the Canada Day weekend.

More than 20,000 Muslims and non-Muslims alike as well as international delegates will gather from Friday to Sunday at the International Centre in Malton. The three-day event will include lectures by scholars and educators who will promote Islam and address common misconceptions about their faith.

Lectures and presentations will cover Islam's perspective on the environment, gender equality and the wearing of the veil, the debate regarding creation versus evolution, the use of metaphor in the Holy Qur'an and establishing peace at home.

Canada Day celebrations on Sunday will also be an integral part of the event's agenda.

Dignitaries including Premier Dalton McGuinty, Ontario Progessive Conservative party leader John Tory and local politicians will attend.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community was established in 1889 by Hadrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian, India. Today, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has millions of members in over 180 countries. Its members are dedicated to practicing and professing the peaceful and moderate message of Islam to the world and serving humanity.

The convention is open to the public. Admission is free.

It gets underway Friday at 5 p.m. at the International centre in hall Number 5.

The plan was to build an indoor basketball court for the kids.

"We wanted a simple hall for basketball -- that's how it started," said Dr. Safeer Kahn, spokesman for Calgary's Ahmadiyya, the Muslim sect constructing the huge mosque at 53 Ave. and 44 St. N.E.  More
